Harbour Update – posted 06/12/18

We had a rescheduled school bird boat today which was luckily squeezed in-between another front coming through! There was another good mix of birds that would have been visible from the shoreline including 6 Eider, 1 Great Northern Diver and 1 Common Scoter off Bramble Bush Bay, another Great Northern Diver off Shipstal, 27 Spoonbill actually on Shipstal Spit, 50+ Red-breasted Merganser across the harbour along with 10 Goldeneye, 20+ Great Crested Grebe and 1 Guillemot off Poole Quay. On the Brownsea Lagoon there were 300+ Avocet, 1500+ Dunlin and 40+ Bar-tailed Godwit. A Peregrine flew across the harbour mouth with another over Shipstal. At Lytchett Bay the ringtail Hen Harrier was seen and a male was seen briefly near Swineham. Also at Lytchett Bay was 1 Water Pipit and 1 Green Sandpiper. Our ‘Birds of Urban Poole’ guided walk this morning started off with a cracking Kingfisher on the quay along with 5 Goldeneye and 7 Red-breasted Merganser in Poole Park. Also all the usual Brent Geese, Turnstone, Ringed Plover etc along Baiter. An evening count at Brands Bay produced 7 Black-necked Grebe, 73 Red-breasted Merganser, 156 Pintail, 7 Grey Plover, 27 Avocet and 1 Greenshank.
