Harbour Update – posted 09/08/24

A much brighter and dryer day in the harbour, making for nicer conditions for our early morning Summer Safari Cruise. Good numbers of waders building in the Wareham Channel on the low tide with c300 Black-tailed Godwit, 1 Knot, 2 Whimbrel, 9 Ringed Plover, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Greenshank and 1 Spoonbill. At least 4 Osprey were hunting throughout the morning in the Wareham Channel with 1 catching a fish while we were watching. We also had 1 juvenile Peregrine hunting and 1 Marsh Harrier in the Wareham Channel. On the Brownsea Lagoon there were a total of 19 Spoonbill, roosting on the high tide as well as 1 Avocet, 1 Greenshank, c10 Turnstone and 1 Ringed Plover. 4 Osprey and 6 Ringed Plover were also seen over Lytchett Bay this morning, although no doubt some of these will have overlapped with the birds seen from our boat this morning. 1 juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was in Brands Bay this morning, a rare visitor to this part of the harbour. Also present were 1 Grey Plover, 93 Curlew, 4 Whimbrel, 167 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Bar-tailed Godwit, 87 Redshank, 2 Turnstone and 10 Dunlin.

Our team member Mya is walking 22 miles around Poole Harbour on 20th September in aid of Birds of Poole Harbour! This is a huge effort and we’re very grateful for her taking on this challenge in support of us! If you would like to support her you can donate via the link here.
