Harbour Update – 28/10/26

Cracking conditions for a safari cruise this morning! Highlights came in the form of 3 Common Scoter nr Arne Bay, 39 Spoonbill, 23 Knot, 260 Avocet, 70 Dunlin, 5 Dark-bellied Brent Goose and 6 Mediterranean Gull on Brownsea Lagoon, a male Bearded Tit at Swineham Point, 4 Marsh Harrier & a Red Kite across the Wareham Channel, plus 2 Kingfisher on Poole Quay before departing. It was also great to bump into the 10-year-old JERSEY ringed Shag again after finding the bird on a Safari back in Feb ’26. The bird was sat on the exact same cluster of buoys off Lake Yard Marina – an excellent example of winter site fidelity.
Elsewhere, a scan from Jerry’s Point, Studland offered an early wintery vibe with 14 Red-breasted Merganser and a Black-necked Grebe. A half decent vis-mig session at Ballard Down at first light featured a flyover Ring Ouzel, 7 Redpoll and a small push of Redwing, Fieldfare and Song Thrush. 2,000+ Woodpigeon south over a (surprisingly quiet) Lytchett Bay ringing session was reflected along the coast. A late Willow Warbler trapped and ringed at Carey Ringing Station will have got hearts racing when first encountering the bird.
It’s well worth scrutinising any and all Rock/Water Pipits in the harbour at the moment. There are local colour-ringing schemes for both species led by Stour Ringing Group at Lytchett Bay, but you may just find a foreign-ringed bird like the FINNISH Rock Pipit (Scandinavian ssp. A. p. littoralis) recently found at at Kimmeridge! Please do share any Harbour colour ring sightings with us…
