The first day of October brought with it a nice record of a flyover Ortolan Bunting at the Piddle Valley Ringing station. It flew over vocally, heading west over Wareham Common at tree height. 1 Quail was flushed at Ballard down, west of Glebelands and there were a smattering of Yellow Wagtail, Wheatear and Common Whitethroat too. 3 Glossy Ibis landed in Lytchett Bay this morning along with 2 Spoonbill. 1 Razorbill was photographed off Branksome this morning. In Brands Bay there was 1 male Ruff (a good record for this site), 6 Greenshank, 2 redhead Goosander and 9 Pintail.
We took out our first School Bird Boat of the season today and it was nice to show the kids 1 adult Osprey fishing (especially in October), along with 5 Great White Egret and 2 Marsh Harrier and 1 White-tailed Eagle in the Wareham Channel. On the Brownsea Lagoon there were 104 Spoonbill, c300 Avocet, 2 Knot and 1 Curlew Sandpiper. An unringed juvenile Osprey was also fishing in the saline lagoon at RSPB Arne, so at least 2 Osprey still in the harbour.
