The Little Owl; Our Vanishing Goddess
Dr Emily Joáchim, a conservation biologist who is fascinated by raptors and owls, recently completed her PhD on the breeding ecology of the little owl in England; a species which has declined by 65% in 25 years.
Emily’s talk will begin with the little owl’s history and status in the UK, with special focus on the possibility that this owl colonised England from mainland Europe, followed by key findings of her research on this species’ breeding ecology in Wiltshire and Lancashire. Next, Emily will share her forthcoming UK little owl projects, ending with advice on how you can help our declining little owl population.
Emily completed a BSc in Zoology and a PhD on the little owl’s breeding ecology at the University of Reading. She has volunteered on conservation projects for a number of NGOs, including Avon Wildlife Trust, Institute of Zoology and the Hawk Conservancy Trust.
